If you know me at all you know I have a really odd obsession with Savannah...perhaps Georgia as a whole. It was a family vacation spot growing up so perhaps it is all the great memories, and AMAZING food. Seriously you guys, southerners are on point with their food. With the exception of pizza, New Yorkers blow that out of the water ;)
Anyway I am going on a fun 5 night, 6 day stay with Gavin this fall. We leave San Francisco on October 30th and will be taking a red eye. I've never flown overnight so I hope it goes well. Then we land on Halloween around 10am. I figured, I've done Halloween in New Orleans so why not do it in the most haunted city in America!?
Thus far I have one day planed for us. On Halloween we will be eating at the Pirate House and that night we will be doing a 11pm haunted cemetery tour. I am so excited! Gavin probably won't be but I tried riding motorcycles once so all is fair in love and war.
Savannah is such a unique city. It plays a really big part in American history as well. It is know for it's super pretty town squares. Savannah had 24 original squares; 22 squares are still in existence today. Savannah also has a very dark history as well. Savannah is considered by many to be the top haunted destination for tourists east of the Mississippi. Nearly every building in the Historic District has a ghost story associated with it. So I did some research and put together the top 5 must see places while in Savannah (in my opinion) for some scary fun!
1. The Pirate House - It is actually where I had my third birthday. I was into ghost and the civil war while other girls were into Barbies. C'est la vie! Like I mentioned, this is where we will be having dinner on Halloween. Aside from having great food it has a very interesting history. It was built in 1794 and was originally a bar for sailors. Reportedly, the basement was used to shanghai unwary (and unconscious) men through a secret tunnel which led to the Savannah River, where the men were forced into seafaring service against their will. It is also reported to be haunted by sailors from the past.
2. Olde Pink House- Another restaurant made the list, it was originally built to house James Habersham Jr. According to an Olde House tour guide, “One woman got a really bad feeling in the room, like being watched, and as she hurried to wash her hands and leave she glanced in the mirror and saw a dark shadow zip through the reflection. Another woman said she had a similar feeling and there was some decorative fringe on a lamp in there, and it begun swinging even though there was no vent or breeze that could have caused it.”
3. 17Hundred90 Inn and Restaurant - This is a location that I have never been but plan on seeing. Also a restaurant, this location is haunted by many different ghosts. A salve cook who bangs pots in the kitchen, a young servant boy who leaves change everywhere or the most notorious spirt, perhaps of all Savannah, Anna. Anna roams the building and has been spotted in room 204 awaiting the return of her sailor who was lost at sea.
4. Hampton Lillibridge House - The only house to ever receive an exorcism in Savannah is sure to leave you feeling something! Built in 1796, the Lillibridge house is full of Southern charm and apparently Southern spirits. There have been SO many reports of hauntings but some that have been reported are: a women screaming, a man was dragged by an unseen force and a Savannah police officer once chased something unseen but he felt it was there inside the house. Despite the exorcism that was preformed, the activity really has not slowed down or stopped.
5. Lastly, Moon River Brewing Company - Originally built in 1881, it is considered to be the most haunted spot in Savannah. In the basement lives a malevolent spirit the staff has named Toby. Upstairs is home to equally freighting spirits as well. One night, tour guide Christa Rosencranz said the below happened, "I had a tour group on the 2nd floor and the lights turned themselves on and off. When I took them down the hall, something that looked like it'd been thrown came flying out of an empty room- I didn't investigate and decided to leave at that point, but later a tourist told me she'd seen a woman in an old dress at the top of the staircase of the condemned floor... I've also heard footsteps in the building and often have had tourists report feeling someone bump into them or touch their face. I always get an odd feeling in the second floor and get short of breath while telling the story, which is never a problem I have anywhere else. The air seems strange and thick.”
I will report back after my trip with pictures and stories but until next time, enjoy your week and I hope some of you get the chance to visit this amazing city!
